I have a question for those who know #rust. When I went to school I learned Assembly, ANSI C, Java, and Perl (oh... and Mathematica, but I'm trying to forget it). Then I learned VB (later .NET), C , and Python on my own. I've never been a full-time developer, but I will pick up an occasional pet project. Nearly everything I've done in the last 10 years has been in python.
Should I learn Rust? Are there new #programming concepts? Are there other reasons, as am #infosec professional, that make it worthwhile to run to an "Intro to Rust" class?

bad math, need better data
okay, so... the "bomb spike" is the graph of Carbon-14 relative to... C-12?
I guess I'm thrown off by units of pMC/percent. percent what?
globally: 50 tonnes
nuclear testing: 1.3 tonnes
ocean: most of it
soil/biosphere: the rest
atmosphere: 840kg
3,206,000,000,000 tonnes (CO2 in general) ... hold up I have to have my units wrong.... each ppm is supposed to be 7.82 gigatonnes and we've released 2400 gt max since 1850... does that mean it started at 806 gt CO2 in 1850 or did I mess that up?
is the graph relating a fixed baseline like 1950 or an ever changing %?
#Science #ClimateChange
also, the decrease is NOT due to decay, it's due to exchange w ocean/biosphere
like the Suess effect is just "carbon 14 gets diluted by human use of fossil fuels" (which seems depressing)
C14 is naturally produced in the stratosphere by cosmic ray neutrons at a base rate
nuclear power plants release C14 at night when plants aren't photosynthesizing

Thinking about ownership semantics for a planned refactoring of libscopehal to make heavier use of C smart pointers.
Instruments obviously have to have shared references to their channels.
Channels need weak references to their parent instrument, to prevent circular dependencies.
I'm still waffling over GUI elements, but I think we want shared references in most of the GUI long term (to enable a newly added node to exist in the filter graph dialog or a properties page…

I'm at a conference today up in Boston. Great content, but they do this speed dating thing with the vendors. Instead of walking up to their booth, you rotate around the room and get a pitch.
My favorite game to play is "stump the sales engineer". I got one today that was perfect. I said "if I have control A, B, and C, why do I need your product?" SE kinda looked up to collect his thoughts, then smiled and replied, "yeah well I guess not."
Great to win "stump the SE", but even better when the SE admits it and shakes your hand. I will definitely be buying him a drink tonight.
